After decades in the industrial port area, the statue by Ossip Zadkine (Belarus, 1890 – 1967) is now given a location closer to the city's residents and visitors: the newly constructed Dry Dock Park, just to the north of the Eilandje. Zadkine, whose work is also present in the art park of the Middelheim Museum, is considered one of the most important post-war sculptors. As such, De Messenger is art-historically one of the most valuable works in the Art in the City collection, and it therefore deserves a location that underlines this value.

In 1959, the statue was donated to the city by M. Naessens and F. Bertrand, administrators of the then Bank of Paris and the Netherlands. In the donation letter they expressed the wish that the statue would be “a first greeting from Antwerp to the ships of all nations that visit Antwerp.” This original intention is still fulfilled with the new location in the Droogdokkenpark on the Scheldt bend: the statue - a bronze human figure carrying a boat, a temple, an aqueduct and several miniature figures in its arms - looks out over the river, towards the port.

De Boodschapper van Ossip Zadkine kreeg een nieuwe plek in het Droogdokkenpark. Sinds 1968 stond het vermaarde beeld wat verloren opgesteld tussen de Berendrecht- en Zandvlietsluis als verwelkoming van schepen. Eigenlijk was het kunstwerk voor het Middelheimpark bestemd, want met dat doel had bankier Maurits Naessens het in 1959 aan de stad geschonken. Met de nieuwe locatie wil Antwerpen zijn beeldencollectie in de stad herwaarderen. Dat gebeurt eveneens met de herintegratie van het beeld Moeder en kind van Jozef J. Peeters op het Moorkensplein in Borgerhout en de aankoop van Silver screen van Nadia Naveau en Figure of color van Tramaine de Senna. Het reliëf van Naveau kreeg een vaste plek boven boekhandel Demian op het Conscienceplein. Figure of color staat voorlopig in het stadspark.

Het droogdokken park is ideaal voor dit beeld.
