Henri (Rik) Van Looy, also known as the Emperor of Herentals, is a Belgian former cyclist. He won 493 races and became World Road Champion twice ( 1960 and 1961 ).

He is the only cyclist to have won the six hors category classics (Liège-Bastogne-Liège, Milan-San Remo, Paris-Roubaix, Paris-Tours, Tour of Lombardy and Tour of Flanders). He won the points or mountains classification in the three grand tours Giro, Tour and Vuelta. He especially excelled as a sprinter. His 379 victories on the road are only surpassed by Eddy Merckx with 445.

Van Looy never achieved the overall victory in round races. In 1958 he had to give up as leader in the standings, with five stage wins in his pocket, in the Tour of Spain. In 1959 he comes third in the Vuelta a España and fourth in the Tour of Italy. In both rounds he records four stage victories. In 1962 he started for the first time in the Tour de France. In the eleventh stage he was hit by a motorcycle and taken to the hospital in Pau. Van Looy thus saw his preparation for a third world championship in a row go wrong.

Van Looy also drove on the track. He won twelve six-day races, ten of them together with Peter Post .

In the early days of his career he had to deal with Rik Van Steenbergen, in the latter days he had to compete with an Eddy Merckx, who rode in Van Looy's Solo-Superia (the red guard ) cycling team until 1966.

On 10 January 2005, Van Looy received the Sports Personality of the Year award from the province of Antwerp, a prize awarded by Panathlon Antwerp. Van Looy received this prize for his dedication and inspiration in the Flemish Cycling School.

87ste verjaardag Rik Van Looy gevierd met lichtgevend palmares aan de voet van zijn standbeeld
HERENTALS
In het centrum van Herentals, in de schaduw van de Lakenhal op de Grote Markt werd zondagavond een gedenkplaat onthuld waarop het palmares van Rik Van Looy te lezen staat. Dit vond in beperkte kring plaats op de dag dat de Keizer zijn 87ste verjaardag thuis vierde.

Aan de voet van het standbeeld van wielericoon en Herentalsenaar Rik Van Looy onthulden zijn twee kleindochters Jessica Van Looy en Michelle De Sutter vanonder een Herentalse vlag de lichtgevende tegel waarop een groot deel van de zeges van hun grootvader te lezen staan. Het was in het bijzijn van een afvaardiging van het stadsbestuur, die voor dit eerbetoon zorgden, dat de inhuldiging in beperkte kring plaatsvond.

Het was in augustus van 2017 dat de wielerkampioen z’n standbeeld kreeg. Vandaag, exact op de 87ste verjaardag van Rik Van Looy, werd aan dit standbeeld de ‘finishing touch’ toegevoegd met een herdenkingsplaat die ‘s avonds oplicht en de carriere van Rik in de verf zet. De kleindochters kregen bloemen en Champagne overhandigd voor de verjaardag van Rik die ze aan hun grootvader zullen bezorgen.
