The "Prince of Dutch Letters" and two-time candidate for the Nobel Prize lived and wrote in Antwerp from 1922 until his death in 1989. The society that bears his name therefore thought it was high time to erect a statue. The work was designed by Wilfried Pas.

Walschap was the son of a petty grocer . He was a good student at school and wanted to become a missionary and do great things, convert nations , as he later said. In Louvain he started studying to become a priest , but just before he was to receive his first ordinations , he stopped. He realized that priesthood and celibacy were not for him. He went on to work on the editorial board of the Catholic Flemish weekly magazine Het Vlaamsche Land and later for Hooger Leven . He started Danish ,By reading Norwegian and Russian great authors , he gradually came to new insights about writing, insights that he would apply for a lifetime and for which he would be attacked and censored by the Catholic Church.

As a writer he debuted with romantic verses and a few Catholic plays. In 1925 he married Marie-Antoinette "Ninette" Theunissen (1901-1979), with whom he had four sons and a daughter — and while on holiday in Wenduine in the summer of 1928, he began writing what new insights needed. But , he said himself, I couldn't stop, I just wrote and wrote. And when it was finished, I had written Adelaide.

So let me get this right, he was a finalist for a Nobel Prize? Probably why this statue looks unfinished. “We only finish winners”, the designer probably said.

Номиниран е два пъти за Нобелова награда.През 1975г. е в рицарството и получава титлата барон.Умира на 91г. в Антверпен ( 25 октомври 1989г.)

The statue only looks half finished, and I don’t even know who that guy is, but apparently he tried to win the Nobel Prize twice and lost
